Chapter 33

Tommy

Tommy’s feet slipped and slid as he ran down the stairs and across the tilted deck. More than once he worried he was about to go right off the side of the ship through the gap in the railing. Somehow, though, he stayed on his feet and in control of his limbs long enough to reach Bria, who lay in a crumpled heap, soaked through by sea spray. His knees scraped against wood as he fell to the floor to check on her. His hands scrambled to find her wrist or her neck or some other pulse point so he could ensure her heart was still beating, the whole time cursing himself under his breath.

Maura.

Collins.

Bria.

Declan.

How many people would Tommy let down before his last breath?

“Thoughts like that won’t help you,” said a stern but kind voice behind him. Of course Renna would be listening in on his thoughts.

“Yes,” she said.

“I didn’t ask you anything,” Tommy said without turning to her.

She knelt down, keeping a respectful distance between them. “I don’t listen in unless I have cause to—”

“I don’t care,” he muttered as he leaned forward to pick up the limp fae before standing. She felt so similar to Maura in his arms, and he tried not to think about the youngest sister who had fallen first on this cursed course. Waiting beside the door to the officers’ quarters, he ground out a command for Renna to open the door.

She remained silent as she obliged, entering the small room and holding the door open for him. Tommy surveyed the room briefly. Collins hadn’t budged since being brought in, which was fortunate since the ship was still pitched at a sharp angle. The cot near the ceiling was too high for him to lift Bria into easily at this angle. When Renna moved to lay out bedding on the floor, he nearly thanked her for invading his thoughts again.

With Bria lying down, looking as though she was taking a midday nap, Tommy continued to monitor her shallow breathing.

“Will they be okay?” he asked.

“I believe so,” she replied, sounding more relaxed than the current situation warranted.

Pivoting on his heel, he turned to her awkwardly as the ship continued to circle the maelstrom. “It’s not good.”

“You know it’s not.”

“So how do we get out of this?” he asked. They had no wind, no weapons with which to fight the creature. There was no escape from the trap the creature had snared them in. Renna didn’t answer, at least not with words, her eyes closing and her lips tightening into a line. “So that’s it then. And exactly why am I not supposed to blame myself for this? Why?”

His nails dug into his palms as he tightened his hands into fists and inched closer to her. She didn’t back away.

“A solution may still present itself,” she said, and the optimism in her words punched through his chest. How could she be so calm? They were circling down toward certain death, and she acted as though they had simply run out of cheese or misplaced a favorite book.
